Best optical illusion video ever?

Teavee kindly sent me this…..

P.S. – For those of you in Edinburgh, I am speaking at the book festival on Thursday.  Details here.

It is a stunning real-life version of the classic shadow illusion, and I love it.  What do you think?

  1. Bill Hammer Cassell says:

I think it probably took a bit of work to set up. Very cool.

  2. Stratocastermagic says:

Brilliant! (Although the caption was superfluous…)

  3. If you squint, it actually looks like the same color. Then again, it could be that I’m just that blind…

  4. Phil Watts says:

This doesn’t demonstrate how the illusion works though. The original illustion works because the lighter square appears to be the same shade as the darker squares only because it’s in shadow. When it’s moved on to the darker square, it should be the same light shade as those adjacent to it. The video has been tweaked and confuses the whole illusion.

Or have I missed the point entirely?

    • andyo says:

I think you got the original illusion backwards. In it, the white square in the “shadow” is the same shade as the grey non-shadowed squares (it just appears lighter cause it’s in the shadow).

Even considering that, this one got me for a while too, but the illusion is pretty much the same. The whole big square’s surface is uniformly lit, the shadow is an illusion. The lamp lighting the cylinder from the left is weak enough that it doesn’t cast a significant shadow. You can only tell this when the woman puts her hands inside this “shadow” to move the square. Very clever.

    • One Eyed Jack says:

      There is no shadow.

  5. andyo says:

Is the lamp to the left what magicians would call “misdirection”?

  6. How do they do it? I guess the squares in the shadow have been made extra dark and the actual shadow is not as strong as it appears. That is a very strong light though. I’d like to see it with the cylinder just to get my head around how they did it.

  8. TS says:

It doesn’t matter what I think.
    I think, therefore I am.

  9. dharmaruci says:

i think this is not an illusion. i think it is trickery. there is a much difference between fooling the brain and trying to fool the mind. the mind can never be fooled except by itself.

  10. The other Matt says:

I dont know how its work. I think the secret is hidden in the grayscale of the pattern squares. Maybe they work with infrared light AND normal light and the cam is sensitiv for both kind of light. (If you watch an infrared Photo it will be always in b/w – gray.) Ah, ok and the moved shade is prepared. maybe it reflect the IR Light much more than the visual light. The area in the shadow is illuminated additional with infrared light.

  11. edwardv says:

The shading illusion setup with the lighting could be and perhaps is real. Clipping the squares from a paused video image shows they are the same. But the moving of the square can’t be right. How can it change between an actual light square and an actual dark square when moving between shadow and light? There must be some video trickery. Think about what should happen if the cylinder was not there.

    • andyo says:

The shadow is not a real shadow, it’s an illusion (just painted on, like on the original). The cylinder’s real shadow is not significant, the whole square behind the cylinder is evenly lit, you can tell this from the woman’s hands when she moves the square.

    • edwardv says:

Possibly. But a shadow edge seems to appear across the moving square. Where does that come from? Can all this be setup and recorded without tricky editing afterward?

  12. edwardv says:

I’d like to know how she found that perfectly matching top she’s wearing.

  13. That is just incredible.

  14. Doesn’t really work well. Better on paper, in my opinion.

  15. photonicpat says:

Interesting … it makes me want to get some grayscale paint chips and start messing around with lights and shadows myself.

  16. That was amazing. So simple but stunning.

  24. JJ says:

The check shadow illusion is the my favourite and the best I have ever seen. I have yet to see an optical illusion that tops it.

  25. There is a difference between being a skeptic and being a conspiracy theorist. This is an illusion because the shadow is faked and your brain is doing an unnecessary localized dynamic range adjustment to the shaded region (color constancy).

If that had been a real shadow there would be no effect, the colors would have looked different because, in that case, they would be different.

No faked video, stop action, camera tricks, green screens. Nothing like that at all.

  28. Stuart says:

The board is printed with the shadow just as in the on-screen version. The lighting has to be as even as possible whilst giving the impression that it’s not. There are 2 lights, the one behind the cylinder is made obvious, the other one is made to look like a wider light but it is only filling in the shadow area.

  31. If you suffer from muscle or joint pain including arthritis, then I recommend that you try a infrared lamp that uses a 250 watt bulb. Start with one to two 20-30 minutes sessions twice per day. In a very short time within 2 weeks usually you should experience relief from the pain.

Based on the experience of and numerous friends and family members it is hard to beat a Infrared Lamp with a 250 watt bulb for arthritis and muscle – joint pain relief. although the Infrared Lamp is the “old Technology” it is still the most effective thing that I have been able to find.
