Neil sent me this lovely animated gif (you may need to click on it to get it working) – but you can change the direction of the train by simply focusing on it.  Does it work for you?

Also, lots of people have asked me about performing The Grid on stage, and so I have made this little video about some strange secret sticky stuff that I found.

  1. Amazing
After a few seconds I was able to get the train to go upwards through the roof and eventually break through the earth’s crust.
How do you do it? I have no idea.

  2. Yes it took about 30 seconds but the train did seem to go one way and then the other. I suppose that’s because there’s not enough information for a brains to ‘decide’ positively that it’s going in one direction only.

  3. It helps if you focus on the left side of tne train it will appear to move to the right, if you focus on the right side it will appear to move to the left

    1. I wasn’t aware that I was doing that. Maybe I was. I have to ware one of those eye tracking things to find out. Perhaps not all brains have the same perception ?

  4. I can also imagine the white part of the train going one way, with the red portion, like a shell around it, going the other way. But it’s not as convincing as the normal, solid train.

  5. Yes, once I found the right part of the train to focus on. for me there seems to be a spot two thirds of the way to the left end that makes it flip. Getting it to go back again was tricky, but looking away from the train did the job.

  6. That is the most disturbing email that you have ever sent !

Yup can get it to go both ways – freakyJ

  7. Phil Plait is performing a magic trick on his blog. He could be conspiring to assume your identity. Beware!

  8. It did work for me. First the train went onwards, then it went backward. It took me a little time to make the train go onwards again. Very spectacular.
