A very different type of puzzle this week. Each of these boxes represents a phrase. So, for example, the first one represents ‘Man overboard’. Can you work out the others?
As ever, please do NOT post your answers, but do say if you think you have solved the puzzle and how long it took. Solution on Monday.
I have produced an ebook containing 101 of the previous Friday Puzzles! It is called PUZZLED and is available for theKindle (UK here and USA here) and on the iBookstore (UK here in the USAhere). You can try 101 of the puzzles for free here.
Answers to all of them within a minute or so. Easy.
I quite quickly solved four of them, but cannot solve the knee one.
You obviously live in a posh area.
Nor me. I got the others in about 5 seconds though.
Same here, can’t get the knee one, the rest was easy.
Neon lights?
I can’t get the knee one either and you can’t get any further from posh where I live!
Neon Lights “Knee On Lights”
Got the “road” after a few seconds, “cycle” followed right after. “Knee” took me a minute, “Town” was obvious when I got it.
I have a solution to the “Death” one, but I am not as confident about it.
Excellent, a nice little bit of wordplay,
All done in less than a minute, but then I am a very smart (and not to mention modest) kinda guy.
As quick as I could read them (about 4 minutes! Lol)
Ah, the rebus puzzle. I must try to find out why they’re called that? Akin to cryptic crosswords. Affords the ordinary amongst us with little mini versions of the joy of the aha Eureka moments that usually belong only to the more gifted like Archimedes and Kekule. The bottom left is the only trickster here. Do you recall this popular favourite:

Answer, of course, ‘clueless’
Yes, got all of these within a minute or so. We used to call these sorts of puzzles “Dingbats” when I was young – no idea why.
because there was a boardgame called Dingbats! that was full of these type of puzzles:

good memories 🙂
We call them droedels (pronounce droodles) in Dutch
Hey I’m first to comment!!!!
And I am right up your rear
About five seconds. I don’t know what this says about me because the last time I tried one, about a month ago, it took me a weekend. 🙂
Less than a minute.
Yes, ‘Dingbats’ they are called.
Can’t get the Knee one though!
As that guy that was once on the telly would say: “say what you see”.
yes, just say outloud without the silent letters.
Easy peasy… About 30 seconds.
Four weeks on the trot and Ive managed to get the answers on the friday puzzle before the sun goes down. Im feeling very pleased with myself right now!
Like catchphrase!
just did not got the knee/lights (before i found the solution) and the death / life … the ohter where simple even for a non-native speaker
Happy Friday, everyone. Have a nice weekend.
I have been solving and compiling this kind of puzzle (dingbats) for more years than I care to think about, so it was a nice simple exercise for me this week.
got all apart from the knee one in under a minute, cant think what it could be
How sad it it that I resorted to Google to solve the knee lights one? (and it worked).
I got everything except knee lights and death/life at a glance.
Person B was a liar
I think I’ve all of these before…
Here’s another one to solve
FLAG + POLE
Say what you see!
the knee one would have been better if knee was touching lights.
twominthemutes
Got them in two minutes. Clever. 🙂
cute!
Too easy this week. Got them all instantly!
ok,got all but the death one also !
Pretty easy but fun! Has anyone else heard these puzzles referred to as Wordy Gurdies?
I like word puzzles much more than maths/logic ones! It took me a few seconds (about 5) to solve them all. Yay!
About 4 seconds – always do the dingbat in the Newcastle evening chronicle
I’ve seen enough of these that they are incredibly easy. But I think I’d seen them all before except the knee one, which took me maybe 1.5 seconds instead of .5. 🙂
As a methodological naturalist/ materialist atheist, the bottom center one wasn’t something that came naturally to mind.
Just a few seconds (literally) to solve them all.
Yeah! Got them all straight away!
Oh, dear, if I was taking an average of my times for these delightful puzzles, one in particular would have knocked my time way off! Most of them I solved instantly, but one in particular (the knees) took maybe half an hour before the penny dropped! Thanks for such a delightful Friday puzzle. Brain the size of a planet and I can’t solve one simple conundrum…. 🙂
most in under a minute, but a couple of them (bottom left 2) took me about 5. love it.
I’ve had a lot of practice with these – got ’em all on first read, so well less than thirty seconds, I think.
Fun one-pretty quick& easy.
i love these! only took me a couple minutes for all of them
Four of them: instantaneously. I googled the other two.
These are fun and this set particularly easy. The fact that some had difficulty tells me that this is a math-oriented group of followers. Duh. Like this is news.
About a minute, good old DIngbats.
