Worked for me – the dot pattern was making waves as the rolling thing passed them. Not a very strong effect, but then again, I’m tired and can’t focus my eyes too well at the moment. 😀
Yes (and I’m dyslexic so that makes no difference). Trick is to stop your eyes glancing up at the dots as they’ll stop moving if you try to catch them at it, the pesky things.
What the bleep am I supposed to see? A stupid cylinder being rolled from side to side? So bleeping what? Is this part of a sinister secret conspiracy by evil alien hippopotamuses to make me waste 46 seconds of my life, just to prevent me from helping to build a better society?
I saw nothing except a commercial I had to X out-replayed and sorry, still saw nothing. By the way, I thought i was no longer a member due to your change in comment area and site in general & stupidly signed up again-please don’t send me double emails. Thanks so much.
Yup, although I have to say it took sharp eyesight to see it. Without my glasses on, without looking closely, without blinking to clear my eyes up and make sure I was focused on the rolling thing but without staring too hard at it, I could see the dot pattern “waving” around.
I wonder how it’d work with bigger dots. Maybe just a couple rows of them in a bigger size.
Saw it. The trick is NOT to look at the dots but to rather focus only on the rolling object. Its difficult as the eyes naturally want to go up to the dots when something happens. You have to catch the motion in your peripheral vision.
Yes, an interesting effect of false movement in the peripheral vision. The tricky bit is to keep focused on the cylinder, and not glance up at the dots when they seem to move.
I agree with the ads screwing it up. Was almost EXACTLY the size of the rolling object we were supposed to watch.
I’m trying to determine if the perceived movement goes from light to dark or dark to light? It’s hard because you can’t actually look at it or the effect is lost. Seems to me like it goes towards the dark but the overall motion is perpendicular to the two dots. Weird.
Did work for me but only at the first part. For people they doesnt see anything weird: Try again with tired eyes. Be relaxed. The dots will move only a bit, nearly from the rolling object.
It was a little hard to totally focus on the rolling object, but when i could the dots moved in a wave like pattern. I think that the people who cannot see it aren’t concentrating only on the rolling object!
It sort of worked for me but I thought it was a bit weak because the rolling object was so stop and start in its motion. If it had been a smooth rolling motion at a constant speed or even better 2 or 3 objects rolling in succession I think it would have worked much better.
Did the dots seem to be moving down towards the rolling object for anyone? They did for me at first. I kinda saw the wave effect. Then when the guy turned the page the other way up, it stopped working. Why did he start moving the object slower?!
This illusion seems to work because our eyes try to accomodate not only the rolling candle but also the offset dots in our peripheral vision. We can’t quite see both without the ‘movement’. Have to try different variations of this where dots are spaced further apart, closer together, in a straight line, and also if their seems to be any difference in perceived movement between early morning and late evening? Amazing how our minds eye can be tricked.

Hi just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the pictures
aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its a
linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different web browsers and both show the same results.
We absolutely love your blog and find almost all of
your post’s to be exactly I’m looking for. can you offer guest writers to write content for yourself?
I wouldn’t mind publishing a post or elaborating on many of the subjects you write in relation to here.
Again, awesome web site!
Nope, don’t get it.
Couldn’t focus on the rolling thing because I expected the dots to do something.
really sorry… but nothing happened for me… 😦
didn’t see anything either.
@Damocles, @Aseem Kumar:
They move like a wave, I saw it clearly!
Found it a little hard to see, but I saw them moving like a wave too.
Nothing to see here!
Works well for me on my iPhone.
Got it! Wow, that’s a good one. Catch the wave!
@David Holman, let me have my first cup of coffee and I’ll see if there’s movement.
Worked for me – the dot pattern was making waves as the rolling thing passed them. Not a very strong effect, but then again, I’m tired and can’t focus my eyes too well at the moment. 😀
Yeah the same to me
It only worked when an ad didn’t cover the entire candle 🙂
adblock
No but i am dyslexic.
It worked a bit for me, I even enlarged it to fill my 42″ screen, and it never got very profound. …but I did see a little of the effect. Kinda neat.
Yes (and I’m dyslexic so that makes no difference). Trick is to stop your eyes glancing up at the dots as they’ll stop moving if you try to catch them at it, the pesky things.
Didn’t help that a Google ad popped up over the top of the rolling thing.
It worked for me, but its quite hard to resist looking at the dots when they start moving.
didn’t work at all…
I saw an ad for contact lenses.
22/7 != pi
Ok, just kidding. Very subtle effect.
you’ve given me a great idea for a puzzle….
I saw a youtube commercial. was that it?
Didn’t work. I can’t focus on the rolling thing and look at the dots at the same time.
What the bleep am I supposed to see? A stupid cylinder being rolled from side to side? So bleeping what? Is this part of a sinister secret conspiracy by evil alien hippopotamuses to make me waste 46 seconds of my life, just to prevent me from helping to build a better society?
I found it worked on fullscreen when I kept my head still and followed it with my eyes, but not when I moved my head.
I saw nothing except a commercial I had to X out-replayed and sorry, still saw nothing. By the way, I thought i was no longer a member due to your change in comment area and site in general & stupidly signed up again-please don’t send me double emails. Thanks so much.
I works perfectly! amazing wave even with slow roll movement!
Yup, although I have to say it took sharp eyesight to see it. Without my glasses on, without looking closely, without blinking to clear my eyes up and make sure I was focused on the rolling thing but without staring too hard at it, I could see the dot pattern “waving” around.

Doesn’t work so well without my bifocals. Strange but probably not according to the label with them.
Saw it. The trick is NOT to look at the dots but to rather focus only on the rolling object. Its difficult as the eyes naturally want to go up to the dots when something happens. You have to catch the motion in your peripheral vision.
Only works for me if I look at the end of the cylinder. Doesn’t work if I look at the body of the cylinder.
Yes, an interesting effect of false movement in the peripheral vision. The tricky bit is to keep focused on the cylinder, and not glance up at the dots when they seem to move.
Worked! Nice trick.
Worked, but the ad ruined the fun. Use Vimeo rather than YouTube = avoid ads.

Did work for me.. but barely.. not as impressive as others i have seen here
Works for me! That’s pretty awesome!
It worked better for me in a small window than full screen on my laptop.
Yup. The dots look like as if they move in a wave
Worked for me. Weird!
Only on full screen
Very wavy indeed. Now feeling quite sea-sick!
yep wave works for me…
The effect was strong and constant to me. Strongest when eyes were moving from left to right.
It was a little hard to totally focus on the rolling object, but when i could the dots moved in a wave like pattern. I think that the people who cannot see it aren’t concentrating only on the rolling object!
If I concentrate only on the rolling object, I can’t see the dots moving because I’m not looking at them. So that doesn’t work either.
worked for me until the card was turned over, then nothing happened.
For all the people complaining about the ads: use an ad blocker. I use adblocker plus on firefox and never see any.
The dots move like they are being pushed as the block rolls past. Is that what I was supposed to see?
Works for me, when there isn’t an annoying ad covering the rolling thing.
Worked brilliantly – love it
Very elegant! I like that one.
In full screen it works!
Nope, not even a little.
Saw a bit of wavy motion with the dots, but having to deal w/the commercial at the bottom was a distraction and probably lessened the effect.
Yes, works for me, but the perceived motion of the dots makes it hard to concentrate on the rolling thing.
works for me!

Yip – no problems viewing the wavy dots on this one. Feel a bit sea sick now.
Works a little for me when the paper is turned over
Very effective. Just focus on the rolling tube and it will come….
Took the first couple rolls, but I got it, very cool!
my daughter, husband and I all can see it clearly… wave motions… it makes me feel quite dizzy though!

Worked for me. You’ve got the wooziest blog in existence, man.
Anyone else have it only work for when the candle is rolling to the right?
