@wildbunny brought my attention to this great illusion. The image below should rotate after a few seconds (if if doesn’t, click on the image and open it in a new window).
Is that really an illusion though? To keep eyes and mouth upside down while flipping the rest of the picture takes photo manipulation – to me that’s not an illusion.
This is interesting. I’m autistic and the faces look wrong unrotated. Nonautistic people are wired to see faces and imagine intelligences everywhere (hence religion).

This was discussed in an episode of Qi a while back. I think it’s known as the Thatcher Effect.
There’s more ugly on the flipside. Lips, mostly.

No, the entire picture flips… The weird thing is that you don’t see that the mouths and eyes are already flipped when the picture is upside down….
The eyes and mouths are upside down the whole time, the illusion is that you only notice when they are the right way up.
Really good version of the Thatcher effect illusion
I still don’t understand why this works. I can’t get it right even though I know the effect…

That’s quite a generalisation.

I just saw the faces as “wrong” all the time. Is there something wrong with me?
