Everyone and their dog have kindly sent me this…..
It is great, especially if you cover up the bottom of the image with your hand.

Richard Saunders brought my attention to this lovely video by the ever creative Brian Dunning….
Any ideas?
When Jane was just eight years old she developed a bit of a crush on Jim. Jim was eighteen and decided to make a promise to Jane. He carved a heart into a nearby cherry tree and placed his initials inside the heart. The heart was out of Jane’s reach by 16 centimetres. Jim promised to marry Jane when she was tall enough to carve her initials next to his. Jane’s reach increased by 8 centimetres a year, but the tree was growing by 7 centimetres each year.
How old was Jane when she could ask Jim to keep his promise?
If you have not tried to solve it, have a go now. For everyone else, the answer is after the break. (more…)
OK, here we go with this week’s teaser.

We are fast approaching the party season. For the past couple of years I have created little videos containing science stunts to help ensure that you are the life and soul of any party. I have just released the 2011 video – here it is….
Which was your favourite stunt?
Over the weekend I tweeted a Boing Boing link about the use of pepper spray by American police as they tried to arrest peaceful students at UC Davies. If you haven’t seen the video, it is here:
The UC Chancellor, Linda Katehi, refused to condemn the police, and held a press conference about the incident. Hundreds of students then decided to sit in total silence as Katehi left the conference (more about the incident here). It is an amazing piece of footage:
If you had been Katehi, how would you have felt?
First, the tickets for the next event at the Edinburgh Secret Society go on sale at 10 a.m. today!
On Friday I posted this puzzle….
A lovely puzzle this week.
I have a box and inside the box are four stones. One stone is white, another is yellow, the third is blue and the fourth stone is also blue. I put my hand into the box and pick up two stones. I bring my hand out in a fist, look inside my fist and remove a blue stone. What are the chances of the other stone in my hand also being blue?
