Which way turneth the wheel?

Harvey James sent me this lovely photo that he had taken of Hull Fair.  It’s great because the big wheel looks like it is oriented to the right one moment and then flips to the left (it works much better if you click on the image and enlarge it)…..

Does it work for you?

    Very week effect for me.

  2. Sue Says:

I had to try hard to make it turn to the left – just managed it briefly.

  3. M Says:

Works only if i look at the top half of the wheel only. Not very strong. Nice picture though.

  4. Toon Says:

Not at all, actually. The huge braces that hold the wheel up ruin it. It feels a bit like as if it were a picture of a bicycle.

    Great effect!

    Does it work for you?

The wheel turneth not.. Whether I try hard or relax and stare, nothing.

it’s not meant to turn. The illusion is that sometimes you see the wheel from the left and sometimes you see it from the right.

    That’s beautiful. Simple yet effective.

    Clockwise, man!

  9. Martha Says:

Yes I think so. Works best if you look at the big crane-like thing to the left of it

  10. Bernhard Says:

can’t flip as i see the “feet” of the wheel …

It looks like it faces one way when viewing the top part of the wheel (the wrong way) due to the way the lights shine through the spokes.

It appears to be the correct way round when viewing the lower part of the wheel, using the struts as a reference.

If I look at it for any length of time, it turns into a very confusing figure eight, with the top half oriented right and the bottom half oriented left. Which makes me dizzy, so I stopped looking at it.

    Cool pic. I’m thinkin clockwise???

Works fine for me in both picture sizes. It’s easier for me to switch it in the large view though.

Totally works for me. Actually, I find it hard to make it orient the right way (as indicated for the base) – if I relax at all, it flips the other way on me.

worked perfectly, when i look at the upper half i can switch it back and forth. judging by the colums the left(more lighted) half is in front from that perspective.
    great pic!

  17. Mark Baars Says:

Yep, it keeps flipping here! Cool one!

It doesn’t work for me (front always to right of back) even trying suggestions of earlier postings. But I am more a scientist than an artist, so perhaps this affliction is the problem.

Shame, because other “illusions” have worked well for me.

This morning I looked at it and I could not see it at all. However, now I can. I wonder if it’s because I’m tired? Weird….

works well when I move my monitor from left to right….love the picture and all the details that can be seen.
