This morning I will be on the Today program discussing whether there is any scientific evidence to support the ideas of Sigmund Freud. As such, I thought that it was appropriate to run with an inkblot test. So, lay down on the virtual coach, clear your mind and tell me what you see when you look at this image….

My absolute first reaction – before taking in all the details – was two witches stirring up a potion with their fingers. But I find that a bit boring. Almost everyone will see a pair of human figures, differing only in who those figures are and what they’re doing.
What happens if you turn the image upside down? Ah.
It’s a bug-eyed monster wearing a waistcoat and workboots and some sort of ornamental butterfly-shaped thing probably attached to his (invisible) belt. He has two mouths, one in the usual place and one on the top of his head, and is waving his arms about manically. The viewer is watching, I think, through a pane of glass, on which there are two splatters of blood. I’m not sure whose.
Right…now I rotated it 180 and then reversed the foreground and background so background is black and foreground turned white and the red became a nice teal blue and it looks like a giant monster crab standing up with it’s crab claw arms clicking open and closed! sooooo very cool!
First glance? An x-ray of someone’s abdominal cavity….

I see two woman bent over slightly as they put their handbags on the floor. A butterfly flutters between them while two kidneys dangle on arterys on either side of them. The woman have matching penis and clawed feet.

After my earlier “women picking something up” I looked at what the rest was saying. I also see the clown and I know why some see men.
Now I looked again and I saw a train coming straight at me but only for a second. Then I saw the women again

I just searched the rorschach-tests and have read what most people say by looking on these. Actually it would be more interesting if we have it in our Hands and are able to rotate it as well as just choose a tiny part of the image.
Anyway I see a pair of Monkeys, no Humans visible in my eyes.
Isn’t it normally a group of 8 or 10 tests?

I saw two groomed poodles looking at a butterfly above a puddle.
On second sight: Two ladies with bags bowing forward.
But at first I concentrate on the negative image within the black shapes:
I saw a torso and legs of a pale man sitting legs appart on a toilet.
So what, Mr. Freud?
Symmetrical but semi random splodges. I can make up numerous images but it’s not what I saw on first viewing the image and I can’t say any one of them is more meaningful than any other.
I guess that means I’ve got no imagination or freedom from preconceptions. Probably the former. :’(
Nah… I see the same thing with any of these patterns, and I think I’ve got a fair amount of imagination.
The thing that always stops me seriously seeing something in these patterns is the fact they’re so perfectly symmetrical. In the world I see around me, there are very few scenes where there’s perfect symmetry down the middle, especially if it involves people doing stuff.

Inkblot tests remind me of Watchmen the movie, where Rorschach insists on seeing cute butterflies, when presented an inkblot.
My first impression was two persons (not sure about gender) lifting something, maybe a basket.
The red patches looked like blood to me, but I couldn’t figure out where it could’ve come from.
The illogical presence of the blood kind of took me back to thinking it was just ink on a paper.

Whilst washing the brains, they have the laptop out between them and are looking at Richard Wisemans blog and discussing what each other sees in the inkblot test.
Unfortunately for them however, there are two axes swinging towards their heads, so its unlikely they will get to eat the fruits of their labour, nor indeed find out that it is actually them in the inkblot test, and that if they had worked it out sooner, they could have saved themselves being decapitated.

I think I must be… very… very odd, because what I saw was way different from what anyone else seems to have seen. And a bit more morbid.
My immediate reaction to it was to see a person being ripped into two down the center, with the red splotch in the middle being their heart and the two on the sides being blood splatter. I… I have no idea what they says about me. *cowers*

To me it looks like 2 guys fucking the skull of a cow through the eys, in a synchronised manner, and a butterfly that´s enjoying this view.

I hope your answer to the question was “No.” The chapter on Freud in the most recent edition of my favourite intro Psychology text is now much shorter:
