I think that is is perhaps the best ‘moving image’ illusion that I have ever seen….

However, every time I post something like this, many people simply cannot see the ‘movement’. Surely everyone gets this illusion?

As an astigmatism sufferer and being very short sighted, to get it to move (and move it does!) I have to vary the distance between me and the screen.
June 24, 2010 at 5:38 am |
It does move for me, but only a little bit and no where near as much as others you have previously posted.
June 24, 2010 at 5:38 am |
For me, it alternates between moving and not, and when it moves, it alternates between rippling and one layer sliding under diagonal bars.
At first, it seemed static, but then I ran my mouse pointer over it, and its started moving.
June 24, 2010 at 5:42 am |
It seems to move along with my saccade. It would probably work better if it were full-screen instead of a little tiny postage stamp.
June 24, 2010 at 5:42 am |
It moves, but I have seen others that move better and more dramatically for me.
June 24, 2010 at 5:42 am |
I see no movement, from whatever distance I look at this picture.
(I see movement in many other images like this one) but I see waves building up (in 3d) occasionally. The 3d effect vanishes near the advertisement part.
June 24, 2010 at 5:45 am |
barely
underwhelmed
June 24, 2010 at 5:55 am |
This is actually one of the worst that I’ve seen. Usually they move quite a lot, but this one only moves a bit, and only if I let my eyes go out of focus. Odd…
June 24, 2010 at 6:00 am |
I did get a little movement. I think there would be better results if we could get a much larger image. I think it would be really great with a full screen image.
June 24, 2010 at 6:08 am |
I just see a very slight ripple … sometimes.
June 24, 2010 at 6:14 am |
I don’t see any movement at all while I always see it!
June 24, 2010 at 6:16 am |
Which part is meant to move? Nothing’s happening for me!
June 24, 2010 at 6:17 am |
Sitting close, staring at a spot near the middle for 10 sec, then leaning slightly back and forward works a treat for me.
June 24, 2010 at 6:20 am |
while i normally see these easily, this was harder. i found that i/the screen had to move in some way in order to see a rippling effect (e.g., changing my distance from the screen, or scrolling up/down to the image).
June 24, 2010 at 6:21 am |
I do recall the advert for this -
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_StG-TzxEvmY/SF9nM7nTrBI/AAAAAAAAAJU/KuDKLP2NQbg/s400/THE%2520COMMUNARDS%2520-%2520NEVER(SAN%2520PAULO%2520REMIX).jpg
being in Smash Hits. The movement (in the original print version, which was really bright) was a great advert for a poor song.
June 24, 2010 at 7:10 am
You got something to say about the Communards you can say it to me.
June 24, 2010 at 6:33 am |
others usually move – this one does not
June 24, 2010 at 6:35 am |
Sorry, nothing happening/moving :0(
June 24, 2010 at 6:45 am |
If I look directly at it there is no movement but if I move my eyes back and forth across the picture it looks like its moving
June 24, 2010 at 6:48 am |
Just fuzzy on the borders between the colours, but no movement.
June 24, 2010 at 7:06 am |
I don’t get much movement unless I zoom in on it. Then I get a lot.
June 24, 2010 at 7:07 am |
nothing….it’s just mildly irritating
June 24, 2010 at 7:12 am |
Nothing
June 24, 2010 at 7:25 am |
Nope – doesn’t move for me at all.
June 24, 2010 at 7:27 am |
It moves a bit if I move my head while looking at it, but it’s not a patch on the grey one you posted a while ago.
June 24, 2010 at 7:38 am |
It didn’t move for me. But when I read the first comment I leaned forwards and it moved a bit and then again as I moved back. I’d agree with others that some of the previous ones that you posted are much better.
June 24, 2010 at 7:47 am |
Static for me.
June 24, 2010 at 7:54 am |
Barely moves for me, seen much more active colours.
June 24, 2010 at 8:03 am |
It doesn’t move, i think this is a bluff on your part
June 24, 2010 at 8:17 am |
Yes it moves, but I’m mystified as to why you think it is the ‘best moving image’ ever…
June 24, 2010 at 8:22 am |
Sorry, no. It seems a little undefined when I actively move my head towards or away from the screen, but that’s it — static the rest of the time. Viewing on a MacBook Pro.
June 24, 2010 at 8:29 am |
This is the first one you’ve posted that I cannot see move! If I scroll the screen a bit it sort of flickers out of the corner of my eye but that’s about it
Normally I see these things immediately.
June 24, 2010 at 8:30 am |
I think Herr Wiseman is playing with us.
June 28, 2010 at 1:06 am
I agree with you Fergus. I think Richard is playing a suggestive mind game with us. It doesn’t move for me no matter how I look at it.
June 24, 2010 at 8:37 am |
Cannot see this move at all. First such image which is claimed to move that does not.
June 24, 2010 at 8:40 am |
It moves for me a bit if I move further away or closer to the screen and also it moves slightly if I move my eyes around the picture. If I just look at it, it does not move! I can see a 3D wave effect though!
June 24, 2010 at 8:48 am |
I think the image is too small to get the effect. If I increase the image size to almost full screen I get the movement effect, but not very much. I think that is because the image is quite poor quality when viewed at that size. Do you have a higher resolution version?
June 24, 2010 at 8:51 am
Here’s a bigger version
http://www.ibelieveinadv.com/commons/ibbra2.jpg
June 24, 2010 at 9:07 am |
If I move my eyes repeatedly around the image then it moves a bit… I’ve seen WAY better illusions though. So it seems that different illusions suit different people best?
June 24, 2010 at 9:13 am |
It works very well for me. I like to think of this ability as a sign of intelligence.
June 24, 2010 at 9:14 am |
I can see it move (it helps if the image is larger), but it’s not nearly as good as your Twitter background (http://twitter.com/RichardWiseman) which is really impressive, the best I’ve seen.
June 24, 2010 at 9:30 am |
Nothing at all, I’m afraid, as has happened with some of the others posted here.
I just moved it to another screen and enlarged it; still nothing.
June 24, 2010 at 9:36 am |
Absolutely moves for me, yes.
June 24, 2010 at 9:49 am |
It only moves as my eyes move across the image. If my eyes are still the image does not move.
June 24, 2010 at 9:49 am |
Definitely moves this end. Also, staring at the centre of the image from a distance seems to produce a static 3D effect: channels with actual depth and height.
Very cool use of illusion for advertising purposes, wethinks.
However, when it comes to mind-altering wibbly wobblyness, your twitter background is far superior!
June 24, 2010 at 9:49 am |
I get an overwhelming urge to buy a Sony Bravia TV. Tell me you’ve not sole out, Wise Man!
June 24, 2010 at 10:17 am |
Barely noticeable.
June 24, 2010 at 10:19 am |
No movement at all.
June 24, 2010 at 10:56 am |
It only moves very slightly, in my peripheral vision, but it does give me a headache when I look at it.
June 25, 2010 at 8:31 pm
Two days later, and it just moved. I was looking at the post above this, and almost jumped when something randomly started rippling on the screen. Interesting, an illusion that sneaks up on you…
June 25, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Ehm, one day even, judging by these dates. I blame work.
June 24, 2010 at 11:36 am |
I don’t know about movement, but I can see a bunny rabbit and a beautiful butterfly and they both remind me of my childhood.
June 24, 2010 at 11:36 am |
Only slight flickers now and then. Nothing definite. I’m red-green deficient, though, so that might have something to do with it.
June 24, 2010 at 11:40 am |
As with all of these types of images, they don’t appear to move but I can make them move by scanning my eyes over the image. Think I first saw this type of image in the early 1990s at uni, so I probably now look at them with my eyes dead still rather than a (more typical?) scanning pattern.
June 24, 2010 at 1:04 pm |
Normally, with your posts like this, I do see some type of movement. Sadly, none with this image.
June 24, 2010 at 1:06 pm |
I have dusteranopia, so I thought that was my color-blindness that did not allow me to see this movement, but reading comments above, it seems that is not due to my color-blind condition.
June 24, 2010 at 1:07 pm |
It moves for me! Usually those types of moving image illusions do not work as well for me.
June 24, 2010 at 2:49 pm |
How odd, I thought. It’s the first time it doesn’t move for me. As I sat up and approached the computer to comment, it moved! *sigh of relief*
June 24, 2010 at 3:05 pm |
Nope
No movement whatsoever for me, with or wothout my varifocal glasses.
June 24, 2010 at 3:35 pm |
No movement if I just look straight at it. If my eyes move around I see some movement. If I scroll the screen I get movement. I saw no movement with one of the ones you posted earlier, and completely saw the movement with another.
June 24, 2010 at 5:28 pm
To clarify: This image = no movement unless I scroll it up and down.
“I can’t believe this is a static image” (Feb.) = no movement.
Dancing Figures (March) = yes movement.
June 24, 2010 at 3:40 pm |
No movement.
Could it be because I am blind on one eye?
June 24, 2010 at 3:45 pm |
Lots of movement. Every illusion you post works for me.
June 24, 2010 at 4:38 pm |
It looks slightly 3-D, but doesn’t move for me. [glasses, astigmatism, and all]
June 24, 2010 at 4:39 pm
The one titled “I cannot believe this is a static image” [Feb. 18, 2010] moves much more for me and seems to have more depth.
June 24, 2010 at 8:51 pm |
I just noticed that movement comes to a near standstill when the screen is low put on brightness. I suspect that high contrast is very important to make this illusion work.
June 24, 2010 at 11:24 pm |
It doesn’t move at all for me.
June 25, 2010 at 12:05 am |
I figured out that it moves when your pupils dilate and undilate (or whatever you call it). I conducted an experiment by having someone switch the lights on and off while i was looking a it and it moved a great deal more than when the lights were just left on for a bit or left off.
June 25, 2010 at 12:13 am |
[...] Does this move for you? I think that is is perhaps the best ‘moving image’ illusion that I have ever seen…. [...]
June 25, 2010 at 7:47 am |
This moved for me straight away, it sort of ripples. To get it to keep working I just blinked.
Wish it were that easy to see those bloddy magic eye things-them I just can’t do!
June 25, 2010 at 11:18 am |
No
June 25, 2010 at 12:13 pm |
It does move, even if I look ‘through’ the image in a 3d stereographic image way.
no just kidding it’s just fun to look at patterns that way.
It’s a pattern and I test every pattern I see for hidden 3d stereographic images
June 25, 2010 at 12:41 pm |
It only moves when I move.
June 25, 2010 at 1:25 pm |
Again, monitors matter… it appears. At home (CRT) didn’t moved, at work (TFT) it appears to move (sometimes). The effects is a kind of ripping in the image when the perception wonders in that direction…
June 25, 2010 at 3:41 pm |
This one seems to move the most dramatically of all these illusions I’ve seen.
June 25, 2010 at 11:08 pm |
A good ‘movement’ illusion:
http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp7/threespeed79/4709218010_02c33e4240_o.jpg
June 26, 2010 at 12:14 am |
It moves only very slightly for me. I get a much more intense sense of movement from this:

Chris
(Does Richard read these followups or ever reply?)
June 27, 2010 at 5:10 pm
Agree. Yours move beautifully. And I’m speaking from the monitor where that illusion doesn’t happen usually (CRT).
PS.: At least, the puzzles he follows… I never saw him discussing them but he is quick to make corrections or recognizing something is wrong.
June 26, 2010 at 9:22 am |
This moves alot for me. Most of the illusions moves for me.
June 26, 2010 at 10:18 am |
Yeah it moves, the bigger version. Not the best one I’ve seen.
The purple circular one is the *BEST*. Forgot the link, but I saved the pic. It moves like a fan without having to do strange thing to your eyes, and even when shown in directory as small image. Scary.
June 27, 2010 at 5:05 am |
I can see the movement well. I have seen similar pics on my third year Ph.D usability research class.
June 27, 2010 at 2:19 pm |
Nope, no movement whatsoever for me.
June 28, 2010 at 2:22 am |
Nope, unlike many of the past ones, I cannot make this one move. Could it be due to a small 15″ laptop screen?
July 6, 2010 at 5:11 am |
I see the image moving only when I’m moving, changing my viewing angle to the image.
July 8, 2010 at 10:29 am |
As far as i know you only see things like this moving when you are tired.
