  1. Andrew MW Says:

yes i did, as that seemed to be the only possible way that pic was real! cool pic.

  2. Katie Says:

Yeah, I figured it out. But I’m a girl, so I think it’s in my genes. Very cool, though.

  3. Fergus Gallagher Says:

    2 midgets with superconducting magnets.

  4. Nao Says:

    Black tights!

  5. KW Says:

    I agree with Fergus!

She has no stomach or she is wearing black underneath.
Other than that, who knows !

  7. Marco Herrero Says:

I think that she is wearing a black pants (and, of course, she is very thin)

  8. Dave Bath Says:

It is possible, at least in theory, to do something /like/ this with optical fibres, lots of them, each curling around the model so that the ends are pointing 180 degrees from each other.

  9. Fara Says:

Cut and pasting the photo of the model onto one where she wasn’t located there and not cutting the whole outline. Done in a couple of steps.

  10. Matthew Floratos Says:

Apparently there’s controversy about “size zero” models, but I guess this is the next logical evolution in the series – models with parts missing.

  11. chris Says:

Perhaps Derren Brown has taken to hiding in skirts and is using his amazing psychic powers to hold her in place? Just a thought :p

She’s wearing a black sheath skirt under the tutu, and the lower half of the tulle is suspended from that.

  18. Wolf Martinus Says:

It seems that this magician’s assistant is not payed well enough and has to take a side job as a model.

  19. Melissa Says:

Second thought on the picture: It’s a composite of two pieces from the same show. First (base layer) is the mannequin wearing tiny tutu over black sheath; that’s how you get the runway continuity and the layers of ruffles on the top portion. Then paste the bottom of the long skirt from a different model over the mannequin’s legs.

After being sawn in half by Copperfield, his assistant came in very handy as a toilet roll cosy.

  32. Pull Says:

That was weird… I wonder if the illusion was intentional or was a matter of being in the right angle with the right lighting at the right time.

And oh, caption: Recession is really this bad.

“When I said I wished I was taller, I meant ALL of me!”

As to how it’s done: bringing the picture into Photoshop and bringing the midtone levels almost down to zero reveals a very faint shadow of the model’s waist (which is indeed slim) in black underwear.

  49. Dan Says:

“With sudden apprehension, Lola realized that she had left her middle section backstage. . . again.”

  61. Per Says:

The two simplest explanations not involving Photoshop are either that the model is standing behind a table with a skirt like cloth. Or she’s pushing a very flamboyant pram.

  86. Intercosterclavical Says:

I hope that I am not the only saddo to copy the picture name (m203751939-copy.jpg) into Google images to find for the answer before I even tried to work it out for myself… The Googlereflex strikes.

Caption – Finally, I lost a few pounds of pesky legs.

  93. porillion Says:

Boring: Green screen technology – a green band around the dress and one camera; a second camera taking a background shot; and combining the two to subtract the green band making it look transparent.

But in Reality: Scientists at CERN switched on the Large Hadron Collider earlier than expected today. In testing the equipment, they spun protons in a particle beam. However, in a bizarre twist to the ongoing story, a second catastrophic failure occurred in which the protons were accelerated beyond the speed of light – something that was thought to be impossible according to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

During the catastrophic failure of the LHC, the superluminous protons escaped containment as continued outward, passing through a nearby fashion show in the process. Unfortunately, one of the models was caught in the path of the beam and her midriff was transported back in time and remains “out of phase” with normal spacetime by an estimated 2.6 microseconds; enough to give the illusion that here waist has been infinitely thinned.

    YOU SPLIT MY GUT

  106. Luisa Says:

easy! one model was attacked by sharks and lost her legs. she is suspended by wires, while her twin small person sister walks inside the giant tutu… she always wanted to be the stripper inside the cake, but it’s hard to find giant cakes with stairs inside.

Only stumbled upon this blog today but I’ve been working in fashion for some time now so it’s exciting to see the hype around this dress. The full collection features many more of these gowns in a similar vain and is from Viktor and Rolf Spring 2010 runway. They used excessive amounts of tulle and chainsawed it accordingly… quite simple but very effective.

Complete and utter idiots! If you’re a fashion designer you should know about this, she is wearing a black mini lutepi under the dress with the netting and underlaying over each other. The only reason it looks like an illusion is that the drip tray and the guests are wearing dark colours.
