Battle of the clever stuff

30

Last week I staged another battle of the clever stuff, and put an unusual photo of a cabin against the squares/circle optical illusion. The optical illusion won by just 4% so it stays on. This week it is up against a wonderful illusion by Akiyoshi Kitaoka (thanks @fergusgallagher). Have a look at them both….here is the illusion again (the squares make complete circles)….

squarecirclespiral

and here is the new illusion….

acswampplasticVote now and feel free to say what was behind your decision.

Floating square. Much less popular kind of illusion.

  2. Dude says:

True. And it looks like a bacteria in the blood stream :D

The circle of squares illusion makes me feel very nauseated and I just can’t look at it – hence I prefer the second illusion.

The recent image I have seen of the first picture of a molecule has the same nauseating effect on me. Maybe this is another area for research, that is, images that make people feel ill even though they are not gory etc.

The square works best if you scroll up and down using the mouse.

  6. Jim T says:

No the square cirles are still winning it, the orange pattern doesn’t really do anything for me.

Now if you put up the background of your twitter page …

  7. Hilary says:

Floating square takes over from square circles for me because it is multiple illusions in one – the tilt and angle of the floating square varies according to the angle from which it is viewed. It is also more difficult to isolate the illusive elements and therefore for the brain to work out why it is being tricked.

  8. Zap says:

Sorry, the spirally circle squares thing is a much more major brain-f#¤/& than the other one. I think you need to find something in the same category to beat it.

  9. Will says:

I don’t understand how the circle of squares keeps winnings, i don’t find it at all interesting.

  10. I honestly don’t get why the circle one is so great? I look at it and see some circles made out of squares and that all :(

  11. MurrayNE says:

I voted for the circle of squares. The floating square is okay, but pretty static. The circle of squares (despite voting for it) I actually find unpleasant to look at – and that started even when it was just in my peripheral vision.

  12. Martin Owen says:

I am interested in the definition of “clever” here.

  13. Tom says:

The floating square is a bit like questions in an IQ test once you’ve ‘learnt’ it then there’s no value to it or, for that matter, anything similar to it.
It’s quite easy, particularly when looking at the corners, to lose the square altogether.

So it’s still the circles of squares for me.

Check them out, printed on paper and see if they still work. Your screen behaviour might influence what you see.

  14. Sgt Skepper says:

I was debating it at first because they’re both great, but then I scrolled up and down (the square moves) and it won.

  15. This is the hardest decision yet.

The coloured illusion is kind of interesting, but only in motion. If I scroll down just slightly, the square often appears to move slightly to the left. The oddest thing is that the illusory motion does not appear to happen as I’m scrolling down (as one might expect in an animation effect), but rather a moment afterwards.

Sometimes I see the illusory motion with no scrolling at all, but I haven’t yet figured out how to reproduce this reliably.

For those people who don’t get the circles of squares, basically the shape as a whole seems to distort as I quickly move my eyes relative to it. The spaces between the circles seem to expand or contract, so that the circles no longer seem to be concentric, and sometimes seem to become egg-shaped. Some people have reported a spiral effect, but I don’t get that.

I’m still going with the circles, even though I’m bored with them, but it’s a very close call this time.

  16. FrankN.Stein says:

the floating square… it’s the motion for me – seemingly animating an inanimate image.

  17. Alex says:

I still find the circle of squares freakier and harder to decipher, but I’m voting for the floating square to try and change things up a bit. Apparently I’m for illusory term limits.

  18. Vern says:

At this point people must be tiring of circle of squares.

I didn’t vote for it in the first round, but since you wanted it, I’m gonna keep voting it back until you’re seeing it in your sleep!!

…that and it’s still a damn fine illusion.

  19. Eleanor Forman says:

I like the squaring-the-circle concept (as well as circling the squares), as well as the beauty of the image. The second picture is of a square that does NOT float, to me. If it were produced by circles, rather than by a ropelike series of almost-circles, I might call the second one another way to square the circleS.

  20. Anonymous says:

The square one… Made me f*cking seasick.

  21. Sally says:

Still prefer the circles of squares. It is so active, and has a kind of elegance to it. Funny to think, too, that I like it because it is apparently asymmetrical, when in fact it isn’t!

  22. rosiefoy says:

The circle illusion doesn’t looks like interlocking circles to me and I didn’t think this was the intended effect, the second one I like as I feel the effect is as it should be.

  23. rosiefoy says:

  24. Bucket says:

I still love the circle of squares one. Trying to follow the circles around with my eyes makes me actually feel nauseous.

  25. SkepChimp says:

Oh the orange little monkeys holding hands, with each of them holding a giant banana! definately love that one the best ;)

  26. Fizzle says:

    The floating square for me.

  27. Holli says:

My 5 year old immediately said the top one was a series of circles. He does not see a spiral at all! He even took the time to explain to me the difference between a spiral and the picture above.

circle of squares is great. had to actually trace it with my finger before my brain would let me believe the claim.
